Today I am in a motivational mood. Is there anything like that? I’m not really sure, but oh well I am a writer, that is what I do, come up with stuff. I have been missing in action for a while now or MIA as we the abbreviation generation would say and yes I missed you all as much as you missed me. I chose to share with you this story specifically today, on the day Slim Possible is aired and I assure you it is a well calculated coincidence. I had been postponing my fitness plan for ages. I kept on telling myself that I would wake up to a morning run. The alarm would noisily go off next to my bed and I would lazily and grudgingly press snooze it and eventually stop it all together. I got my wakeup call when a friend of mine was set to graduate in two weeks and I could not fit in any of the dresses I wanted to wear to her graduation. I felt really awful because that was one graduation I could not afford to miss. She was not like family but family to me. I blamed myself for all the times I snoozed the alarm instead of hitting the road. I live along the Thika super highway so distance from the road is not really an issue. Anyway apart from being unable to fit into that pretty dress my BMI was soaring like crazy. I was a matter of decimal points from the certified obese levels. I had to do something about it otherwise I would look like a mother of five at 20. When I decided to finally start there was no turning back. It was forward ever backward never all the way. I’m not yet where I want to be as far as my fitness goals are concerned but I am happier with myself now.
An interesting thing about changing your lifestyle to incorporate working out or any other form of change is that you either start today, actually, now or never. Human beings are naturally resistant to change. Tomorrow never really comes as we always get an excuse not to wake up. Be it I slept late, it’s too cold to get up or just five more minutes of sleep. The human body is prone to procrastination. Laziness is part and parcel of this amazing creation that is the human body. Everyone has a degree of it in their DNA. The difference is in how you choose to tune it. If you choose to let it take control then, woe unto you. The human body loves staying idle and doing nothing yet it still wants the good things in life. What a curious paradox huh? A wise man once said,”A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.” Don’t get me wrong though, sleep is important. It has numerous health benefits but don’t let them fool you. You cannot live off them alone.
Remember the dodo, which is an extinct bird was described as lazy, clumsy and a rather dumb bird. You wouldn’t want to go extinct now would you?
It is not an easy transition to make especially if you are not naturally active you have to push it, but it is worth the effort.
Good luck fitness rookie!
